Tour De Cure is a charity organisation that partners with CAN4CANCER to run corporate and community challenges in order to raise money for cancer research and support. Last year, CAN4CANCER was supported by businesses nationally and in 2016, was successful in raising a record $1,000,000.
Later in the year, 3 Pioneer team members will extend our support for CAN4CANCER by being involved in a cycle from Canberra to Sydney. The Tour de Cure event aims to provide funding for cancer research whilst also increasing awareness in the importance of supporting these great causes.
This year’s challenge, proudly supported by Pioneer Credit, involved a huge community effort within the company with nearly 110 passionate team members from all departments taking part. Riders proudly reserved 20 minutes out of their business day in order to donate and give back through action. Collectively, teams were able to keep the pedals moving on spin bikes once again donated by John at Orbit Fitness.
The day kicked off at 8 am where 4 budding team members lead the first 20 minutes, accompanied by Trudi and Jonty, who gallantly took off on their 10 hour, 200km journey to ride the entire day. Many riders demonstrated their active lifestyles by finishing their 20 minutes stint without a bead of sweat. Others, like Oliver and Matt, were raring to go at 9:40am, but quickly underestimated their fitness towards the closing of their 20-minute ride.
Whilst Jonty and Trudi rode the entire day, other team members volunteered to participate for a variety of reasons, from supporting family members who have experienced cancer, through to those that wanted to help the greater cause through a simple donation. It’s these activities that bring together the Pioneer team.
Each Pioneer rider donated a minimum of $2 towards the CAN4CANCER foundation, and come 6 pm, we had raised a total of $2552.20; a fantastic result. The atmosphere and good spirit on the day was incredible with so many people getting involved. As goes Murphey’s Law, what could go wrong did, as cycling enthusiast Trudi endured a late afternoon tire burst, which of course wouldn’t hold her back. After a quick fix, she was back on the bike to finish the day with the same gusto as she started.
